They put away the strange gods. — The moment the sincerity of their repentance was proved, God hears them (Genesis 35:1; 1 Samuel 7:3; 2 Chronicles 15:8).
His soul was grieved. — Literally, was shortened. (Comp. Zechariah 11:8.)
