And ye shall do no work. — Better, And ye shall do no manner of work, as the Authorised version has it in Leviticus 23:31 of this very chapter. (See Leviticus 16:29.) This is the only day which had to be kept like the sabbath, and on which no manner of work was allowed. (See Leviticus 23:3.)

To make an atonement for you. — See Leviticus 16:30.

Leviticus 23:28

28 And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the LORD your God.
