Then arose Peter. — See Notes on John 20:3-10. The fact of Peter’s visit to the sepulchre is common to St. Luke and St. John, but the former does not mention the companionship of the beloved disciple. On the assumption of Joanna being St. Luke’s informant, we can understand that she told what she remembered, Peter’s impetuous rush to the sepulchre, and did not notice that he was followed by his friend.
Stooping down. — The word was sometimes used alone, as in James 1:25; 1 Peter 1:12, for the act of stooping down to look.
