Matthew 12:36,37 - Hawker's Poor Man's Commentary

Bible Comments

"But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. (37) For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned."

As words as well as actions, yea thoughts, which are the womb of both, plainly manifest the state of the heart, whether renewed by grace, or remaining in the old state of unrenewed nature; the idle sinful discourse of the unawakened sinner, (for it is to such our Lord is here speaking), daily testify the state in which he is; and who is already prejudged by his conversation; just as in like manner the lips of' the gracious manifest that they are born to God, to whom there is no condemnation. Romans 8:1; Song of Solomon 4:11; Malachi 3:16-18. I beg the Reader not to lose sight of this passage as referring to the unregenerate sinner living and dying out of Christ.
