blood and water. The question of the physical cause of the Lord's death has been much discussed; but we need not seek. natural explanation of what John records as. miraculous sign. The blood and water may have been symbolical of the sprinkling with blood and cleansing with water of the Old Covenant. See Hebrews 9:12-14; Hebrews 9:19-22. 1Jn 5:6, 1 John 5:8.
