letters. Greek. Plural of gramma. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Adjunct), App-6, for what is written; e.g. an account (Luke 16:6; Luke 16:7); the Pentateuch (John 5:47); Epistles (Acts 28:21); the whole Scripture (2 Timothy 3:15). Hence, used of general literature such as the Talmudical writings (here, and in Acts 26:24). Compare our term, "man of letters", and see Acts 4:13.
