sell, &c. This was the tenth commandment. This command was suitable for the period prior to the rejection of the kingdom (see Mark 10:23), for the King Him- self was present, and what could any of His subjects lack? Compare Psalms 145:13-16.

heaven. Singular. See note on Matthew 6:9; Matthew 6:10.

take up the cross. [L]. Tr. WH. omit these words.

21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him,One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.
