Jude 1:3,4 - Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible

Jude's Reason For Writing (Jude 1:3-4).

Jude had seemingly intended to write a letter dealing with the question of ‘our common salvation', but apparently he had received news about the evil behaviour of people who had come into the church surreptitiously, and were justifying lives of lasciviousness and sexual freedom, and seeing Jesus as but one of many ‘saviours' through whom they could come to God (‘They deny our ONLY Master and Lord' (Jude 1:4); compare also ‘To the ONLY God our Saviour' (Jude 1:25)).

Jude 1:3-4

3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort [you] that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.
