Luke 24:36-43 - Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible

Bible Comments

The Appearance at Jerusalem. Lk. only, but cf. John 20:19-23, which is perhaps responsible for the insertion of Luke 24:36 b and Luke 24:40, which are omitted by early and good authorities. The supposition of a spirit (Luke 24:37) accords with the popular notion perhaps fostered by opponents of the resurrection that a dead man's flimsy shade might occasionally flit out of Hades and show itself on earth. The succeeding verses therefore emphasise the corporeality of Jesus; He has flesh and even eats. So in John 20:25-27, and perhaps Luke 21:13. Some inferior MSS. add honey to the fish. The whole conception is at variance with Paul's idea of the resurrection-body (1 Corinthians 15:37; 1 Corinthians 15:44; 1 Corinthians 15:50; 2 Corinthians 5:1).

Luke 24:36-43

36 And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them,Peace be unto you.

37 But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.

38 And he said unto them,Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?

39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

40 And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.

41 And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them,Have ye here any meat?

42 And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.

43 And he took it, and did eat before them.
