And Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord— Raised above the people, on a brazen scaffold three cubits high, (see 2 Chronicles 6:13.) Solomon commanded the attention of the people, who stood in the court and in the galleries round about, and kneeling down, 1 Kings 8:54. He spread forth his hands towards heaven, and dedicated the sacred building to God, in a most elegant and devout prayer. The noble and animated break in the 27th verse is peculiarly excellent.
