The elders—I exhort,— St. Peter's mode of address here, saying, I exhort, or entreat, who am also a fellow-elder, (παραχαλω, ο συμπρεσβυτερος,) is quite different from the high tone of the Pope, who, under pretence of being St. Peter's successor and head of the church, commands with sovereign authority, like a lord, and not a fellow-elder, which all the apostles were with other elders, though every elder was not an apostle.
