1 Samuel 14:33 - Coke's Commentary on the Holy Bible

Bible Comments

And he said, Ye have transgressed: roll a great stone unto me— The people were so extremely faint through want of food, that they flew upon the spoil, 1 Samuel 14:32 like ravenous birds, and forgot to pour out the blood upon the ground, according to the precepts of their law: to prevent the repetition of which, Saul orders a great stone to be rolled, or brought to him, that an altar might be erected for the sacrificing of peace-offerings, and that the blood might there be properly poured out. The French version renders this, You roll a great stone upon me this day; as much as to say, according to a proverbial manner of speaking, that they would bring upon him and his kingdom the greatest misfortunes. See Martin's note upon the verse.

1 Samuel 14:33

33 Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed:h roll a great stone unto me this day.
