And if there be any other thing, &c.— That was sound doctrine, in St. Paul's account, which condemned wicked practices and evil tempers, and promoted holiness and love; that, therefore, must be unsound doctrine, which encourages the contrary practices, tempers, and experience: here then is a proper test or standard, given by an apostle, by which to judge of the soundness or unsoundness of any doctrine. Some read, To the sound doctrine, (1 Timothy 1:11.) which is according, &c.

10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
