2 Kings 25:23 - Coke's Commentary on the Holy Bible

Bible Comments

To Mizpah— See Genesis 31:49-50 where the reason of the name of this place will be found. It was situate on the east side of the river Jordan, and in the division of the land fell to the tribe of Dan; and here it was that Gedaliah chose to fix his habitation, or perhaps was ordered to fix it, because it lay nearest of any to Babylon, from whence he was to receive his instructions, as to the administration of the government. See Wells's Geography. A fuller account of the events recorded in the following verses will be found in the book of the prophet Jeremiah.

2 Kings 25:23

23 And when all the captains of the armies, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah governor, there came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan the son of Careah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men.
