Who hath delivered us.— Some think that the us and we, in these verses, refer to the Gentile converts only; but though there is no doubt that the Apostle refers to their dark andsinful state, yet there is no reason to believe that he means to exclude himself: for when divine grace made him sensible of what he had been in his pharisaical state, while a blasphemer, a persecutor and injurious, he must certainly have seen himself to have been under the power of darkness; as Christ represents those of the Jews to have been, who, influenced by the spirits of darkness, were combined against him. See Luke 22:53.
