Whether they be thrones, &c.— See Ephesians 3:10. For him, at the end of the verse, means to be in subjection to him,—to be created particularly for his glory. This is justified by what is said, Colossians 1:18 that in all things he might have the pre-eminence.

16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
