Ver. 9. And thine eye be evil against thy poor brother The eye, say the Jews, is the index of the mind: so an evil eye, when giving is spoken of, signifies a covetous and hard-hearted disposition. Proverbs 23:6. Matthew 20:15 and, on the contrary, a bountiful eye is a sign of a generous and charitable soul. Proverbs 22:9. Sir 35:8. And it be sin unto thee, signifies either a great and enormous sin, as the word is sometimes used by way of eminence. Proverbs 24:9. John 15:24. James 4:17 or, the punishment of sin.

9 Beware that there be not a thoughtc in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou givest him nought; and he cry unto the LORD against thee, and it be sin unto thee.
