Ye shall not afflict any widow, &c.— The humanity of the Divine law is always discernible: none are so helpless and pitiable, as widows and orphans: God therefore enjoins, under the severest penalties, a tender regard to them; while he condescends himself to be called the Father of the fatherless, and the Husband of the widow; nay, and even vouchsafes himself to become their Judge and Avenger: I will surely hear their cry, &c. Exodus 22:23-24. See Deuteronomy 10:18. Psalms 68:5.
