He cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them— Moved with just indignation at this notorious breach of that covenant which the people had so lately made with God, Moses broke these sacred tables which contained the chief articles of the covenant, as a symbolical representation of what the people had done: see Deuteronomy 9:16-17.

Exodus 32:19

19 And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount.
