And he said unto him, What, &c.— This inquiry is made, not for information, but for the sake of giving the new name following. The words should here be rendered more properly, Genesis 32:28. Thy name shall be called not only Jacob, but Israel; or Israel rather than Jacob: that is, a man prevailing with God, rather than a supplanter.
