Hebrews 5:4 - Coke's Commentary on the Holy Bible

Bible Comments

But he that is called of God,— Called of God means a particular designation or appointment to the dignity of high-priest; such a one as Aaron had, Exodus 30:30. They therefore misapply this text, who would argue from it the necessity of a peculiar appointment made by man to the administration of an office in the Christian church. How right soever such designations may be, this text has no relation to such matters, but is only intended to prove, that Christ was as eminently and as clearly designed and appointed by God to be a high-priest as Aaron was. In this respect, then, an equality of Christ to Aaron is proved: afterwards the infinite superiority of Christ, even in this respect, will be shewn.

Hebrews 5:4

4 And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.
