Judah mourneth— The prophet represents Jerusalem as a mother who has lost her children, and who is oppressed with grief. The gates are put for the city. Instead of, Its gates languish, &c. Houbigant reads, Its crops fall down and grow black upon the earth.

Jeremiah 14:2

2 Judah mourneth, and the gates thereof languish; they are black unto the ground; and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up.
