Jesus answered, &c.— In answer to the fears and remonstrances of his disciples, Jesus replies, That as the hours of the day are appointed for the various works necessary to human life, and as he who travels in the daytime need not be afraid of stumbling, because he has the sun, the light of this world, to shew him the way; even so the manwho has a season allotted him for performing God's works, and at the same time the light of the divine call requiring him to engage in them, need not be afraid of any danger to which he is exposed in the performance of them; God, whom he serves, being always ready to preserve him: but if any man undertakes God's work at an improper season, or without a call, John 11:10 he may justly be afraid of the danger that he exposes himself to thereby. "By these words," says Cocceius, "our Lord reminds his disciples, that he is the Light of the world, and that, as long as he is in the world, he must necessarily shine; and that there is no danger if they walk with him."
