I that speak unto thee am he.— That Christ was very cautious of acknowledging himself to be the promised Messiah, in his conversation with the Jews, is very apparent. The reason for that caution has been frequently explained in this commentary, and is intimated in the foregoing note, together with his reasons for acting otherwise at present.
