There was a certain nobleman,— Though Herod was only tetrarch of Galilee, yet he was commonly distinguished by the title of king; and as Capernaum lay in his dominions, this person was probably a nobleman of some distinction belonging to his court; for this is the proper signification of the original βασιλικος, which the Syriac and Arabic versions render, a minister or servant of the king; and many have conjectured, that the person who is here spoken of was Chuza, Herod's steward, whose wife is thought to have been converted on this occasion, and to have become henceforth an attendant upon Christ.
