And Gideon said, &c.— There is rarely a faith so strong as to preserve and nourish hope under a lasting and powerful calamity. Great oppression and misery dazzle the eyes, and corrupt the memory, that it cannot call to mind what has been done in the like cases. It gave Gideon courage rather to expostulate with the angel, than to believe him, that the Lord would be with him: Oh my Lord, &c.

Judges 6:13

13 And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.
