If a soul shall sin through ignorance, &c.— Sacrifices, called sin-offerings, are next appointed for such involuntary transgressions, as men might ignorantly and unknowingly be guilty of. And as such sins were attended with worse consequences in some than in others, therefore different offerings are appointed for different persons; as will appear in the course of this chapter.

Leviticus 4:2

2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a soul shall sin through ignorance against any of the commandments of the LORD concerning things which ought not to be done, and shall do against any of them:
