For these be the days of vengeance,— "These are the days of vengeance, wherein the calamities foretold by Moses, Joel, Daniel, and other prophets, as well as those predicted by our Saviour, shall meet in one common centre, and be fulfilled with aggravated wrath on this nation." These are the days of vengeance too, in another sense; as if God's vengeance towards an obstinately impenitent nation had certain periods and revolutions, and the same days were fatal to the impenitent Jews. For it is very memorable, and matter of just admiration, according to Josephus, that the temple was burned by the Romansin the same month, and on the same day of the month, as it was before by the Babylonians.
