Five hundred pence,— Δηναρια, a Roman coin, in value about seven pence halfpenny of our money; so that five hundred were nearly equivalent to fifteen of our guineas, and fifty to one guinea and a half. There is no reason to believe that any mystery was intended by Christ in fixing on these sums rather than any others, which had as great a difference between them.
