A rich man of Arimathea— A city of the Jews, anciently called Ramoth, which lay in the tribe of Ephraim, and was the city of the prophet Samuel. St. Mark 15:43 describes Joseph under these two characters; first, that he was an honourable counsellor; secondly, that he waited for the kingdom of God. And St. Luke 23:51 adds, that he had not consented to the condemnation of Jesus with the rest of the Sanhedrim. See John 19:38 and the note on Matthew 27:1 of this chapter. Some critics would render the last clause, who himself also made disciples to Jesus; that is to say, after his ascension. The word εμαθητευσε has that sense in the 19th verse of the next.

57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:
