Bible Comments

And the children of Israel set forward— After the entire conquest of the kingdom of Bashan, the Israelites marched back to the southward, and then bent their course toward the land of Canaan. They pitched in the plains of Moab: plains which had formerly belonged to Moab, but were now in the possession of the Amorites. On this side Jordan, i.e. on the east side of Jordan from Beth-Jesimoth, unto Abel-Shittim, as we read, chap. Numbers 33:49. Here they staid, till, under the conduct of Joshua, they came to Jordan, and passed over it, Joshua 3:1. By Jericho: in the original it is, at Jericho, the ford of Jordan, that ford it seems, being called Jericho, from the neighbouring city of that name which stood on the other side of the river. This event is supposed to have happened in the seventh month of the fortieth year after their departure from Egypt; and when they had left the mountains of Abarim. Compare chap. Numbers 21:20 with Numbers 33:48. Houbigant joins this verse to the last chapter, and begins the present chapter with the second verse.
