Philemon 1:20 - Coke's Commentary on the Holy Bible

Bible Comments

Yea, brother,— The word 'Αναπαυσον, rendered refresh, is very emphatical; it literally signifies to appease, or quiet; which strongly intimates the emotion which the apostle felt, through the ardour of his concern for Onesimus, and seems to represent the eagerness of his desire for his re-establishment in Philemon's favour, by the appetite of hunger. Compare Philemon 1:7 where the same word is used, and seems to be referred to here with peculiar beauty and propriety. See Matthew 10:40, &c. and Matthew 25:40; Matthew 25:45.

Philemon 1:20

20 Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord.
