Song of Solomon 1 - Introduction - Coke's Commentary on the Holy Bible

Bible Comments

In this chapter, after the title of the book, ver. 1 we have Christ and his church, Christ and a believer, expressing their esteem for each other. (1.) The bride, the church, speaks to the bridegroom, Song of Solomon 1:2-4 to the daughters of Jerusalem, Song of Solomon 1:5-6 and then to the Bridegroom, Song of Solomon 1:7. (2.) Christ the Bridegroom speaks in answer to the complaints and request of his spouse, Song of Solomon 1:8-11. (3.) The church expresseth the great value she has for Christ, and the delight she takes in communion with him; Song of Solomon 1:12-14. (4.) Christ commends the church's beauty, Song of Solomon 1:15. And (5.) The church returns the commendation, Song of Solomon 1:16-17. Where there is a fire of true love to Christ in the heart, this will be of use to blow it up into a flame.
