Zechariah 9:13 - Coke's Commentary on the Holy Bible

Bible Comments

Greece— That Javan, or Ion (for the Hebrew word יון may be sounded either way, accordingly as it is differently pointed) means Greece, anciently Ionia, having its name from Javan, or Ion, the son of Japhet, and grandson of Noah, is sufficiently made appear in Bochart. Geograph. Sacra, lib. iii. c. 3. And by the sons of Javan or Greece are most probably meant here the same enemies of Israel, whose destruction is foretold, Ezekiel 38; Ezekiel 39 under the names of Gog and Magog; which many have understood to denote the Turks, who are now in possession of the same countries as were formerly called in Scripture Javan.

Zechariah 9:13

13 When I have bent Judah for me, filled the bow with Ephraim, and raised up thy sons, O Zion, against thy sons, O Greece, and made thee as the sword of a mighty man.
