And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; [but] the LORD [was] not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; [but] the LORD [was] not in the earthquake:

Ver. 11. And a great and strong wind.] These first terrible apparitions might well be to humble the prophet, and to prepare him to hearken more heedfully to the still voice, and to whatsoever God should say unto him, who could have confounded him, but is content to deal more gently with him: accounting the execution of "judgment" - set forth here by these dreadful representations - "his work, his strange work." Isa 28:21
