And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy [endureth] for ever.

Ver. 21. And when he had consulted with the people.] This gained him much respect amongst them; for he knew that it was no hunting invitis canibus, unwilling dogs, unless the hounds were willing, as the proverb is.

He appointed singers unto the Lord.] See on 2 Chronicles 20:19. Faith lodgeth a certainty in the soul, believing God upon his bare word; and that against sense in things invisible, and against mason in things incredible.

And that should praise the beauty of holiness.] This is a description of God, saith Junius; of heaven, saith Vatablus; of the ark, say others. Psalms 29:2 ; Psa 96:9
