And the king said, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Ahimaaz answered, When Joab sent the king's servant, and [me] thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what [it was].

Ver. 29. Is the young man Absalom safe?] Heb., Is there peace to Absalom? q.d., I reckon it no peace if Absalom partake not of it.

But I knew not what it was.] But he did know, as appeareth in 2 Samuel 18:19,20, &c. This, therefore, was a lie, and it was the product and punishment of his rashness in running, though Joab had dissuaded him.
