So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the LORD: and they anointed David king over Israel.

And they anointed David king.] As other nations crowned their kings, so the Israelites anointed them as types of the Messiah, who was "anointed with the oil of gladness above his fellows," and for them also.
