Ver. 8. Afflictions of the gospel] Affliction is Evangelii genius, a type of the gospel, saith Calvin; hence it is called "the word of Christ's patience," Revelation 2:2; Rev 2:19

According to the power of God] For unless he supports us by his power, we shall never bear up in affliction.
