Bound themselves, &c.] The constable of France, when he covenanted with God, that if he had the victory at St Quentin's he would set upon Geneva, thought no doubt that he had made a great good bargain with God. Much like to Julian the emperor, who going against the Persians, made his vow that if he sped well, he would offer the blood of Christians. But what did God? Came not both their vows to like effect?
