Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, inquired of them diligently] a The children of this world are wise in their generation, but so are serpents, foxes, &c., to the which the Church's enemies are often compared, He thought by this means to have made all sure, but in the thing wherein he dealt proudly and politically, God was above them, as old Jethro hath it, Exodus 18:11. There is neither power nor policy against the Lord; "who ever waxed fierce against him, and prospered?" Job 9:4 .
