And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.

Ver. 8. And they departed quickly] According as they were bidden. A ready heart makes riddance of God's work, and does it up quickly, as afraid to be taken with its task undone. Baruch repaired earnestly, and had done quickly, Nehemiah 3:30. Alexander being asked how he had so soon overrun so many countries, answered roundly, By making quick work, by despatching and not lingering long in a place. Μηδεν αναβαλλομενος. Plut.

With fear and great joy] A strange composition of two contrary passions; but frequently found in the best hearts, Psalms 2:11. God loves at once familiarity and fear.
