1 Corinthians 1:7 - Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible

Bible Comments

So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:

Ye come behind - are inferior to other Christians elsewhere.

In no gift - not that all had all gifts, but different persons among them had different gifts, (1 Corinthians 12:4, etc.)

Waiting for the coming of ... Christ - the crowning proof of their 'coming behind in no gift.' Christ's future coming exercises faith, hope, and love (cf. 2 Timothy 4:8; Titus 2:13). 'Leave to others their memento mori, do thou cherish this joyous expectation of the Lord's coming' (Bengel). The Greek х apekdechomenous (G553)] implies, 'to expect constantly to the end, until the event comes to pass' (Romans 8:19).
