2 Peter 1:6 - Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible

Bible Comments

And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; х En (G1722) ... engkrateian (G1466)], 'And in your knowledge self-control.' In the exercise of knowledge, or discernment of God's will let there be practical self-control as to one's lusts. Incontinence weakens, self-control imparts strength (Bengel). 'And in your self-control persevering endurance х hupomonee (G5281)] amidst sufferings,' so much dwelt on in 1 Peter 2:1-25; 1 Peter 3:1-22; 1 Peter 4:1-19. 'And in your endurance godliness.' It is not to be mere stoicism, but united to piety as its source.
