And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten (or 'scourged') them, х deirantes (G1194)] - for disobeying their orders; possibly also as a compromise with the more violent portion of the Council-too like what Pilate in the case of our Lord, even when pronouncing Him innocent, offered to these same Jewish authorities, and carried into effect (Luke 23:16; John 19:1).
