Acts 8:13 - Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible

Bible Comments

Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.

Then Simon himself believed also. Left without followers, he thinks it best to join the man who had fairly outstripped him, not without a touch of real conviction.

And when he was baptized. What a light does this throw on what is called Baptismal Regeneration! He continued with, [ een (G1510 ) proskarteroon (G4342 ), 'was in constant attendance upon'] Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. Our translators have here departed from the Received Text, which reads as in the margin, 'the signs and great wonders which were done.' Tischendorf omits the word 'great' х megalous (G3173)], as our translators do; but Lachmann, on greatly preponderating authority, as we judge, retains it. The historian's remark here throws a strong light on Simon's true character-astonishment at the miracle, rather than joy in the Gospel, being the predominant element in the feelings of this new convert.
