The people of Canaan are described as thrown into fearful commotion, as panic-struck by the intelligence of the miraculous passage through the sea; and they are specified first among the alarmists, as being most deeply affected by the subsequent movements of the heaven-directed emigrants. From traditional reports of the promise made to the patriarchs, confirmed by the consciousness of their own national demerits, they must have long been aware that their country was divinely destined to be occupied by another race, and that they themselves were, by the same irresistible decree, doomed to utter extermination.
