Ezekiel 27:24 - Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible

Bible Comments

These were thy merchants in all sorts of things, in blue clothes, and broidered work, and in chests of rich apparel, bound with cords, and made of cedar, among thy merchandise.

These were thy merchants in all sorts of things - Hebrew, 'perfections;' exquisite articles of finery (Grotius).

Blue clothes - rather, 'dark purple mantle,' or 'cloaks;' literally, wrappings х gªlowmiym (H1545)]. For "blue" the Hebrew is hyacinth-coloured; not our hyacinth, but a spring violet of a dark purple colour.

In chests of rich apparel, bound with cords - rather, treasures or repositories of 'damask stuffs, consisting of variegated threads woven together in figures' (Henderson).

Made of cedar - the "chests" were made of cedar, in order to last the longer; and also it keeps off decay, and has a sweet odour.
