Ezekiel 9:1 - Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible

Bible Comments

He cried also in mine ears with a loud voice, saying, Cause them that have charge over the city to draw near, even every man with his destroying weapon in his hand.

He cried ... with a loud voice. Contrasted with their "cry with a loud voice" for mercy (Ezekiel 8:18) is the "cry with a loud voice" here for vengeance, showing how vain was the former.

Cause them that have charge over the city - "them that have charge" - literally, men in office. The same Hebrew х pªqudowt (H6486)] is translated officers (Isaiah 60:17), having the city in charge, not to guard, but to punish it, as the root х paaqad (H6485)] often means. The angels who, as "watchers," fulfill God's judgments (Daniel 4:13; Daniel 4:17; Daniel 4:23; Daniel 10:20-21); the "princes" (Jeremiah 39:3) of Nebuchadnezzar's army were under their guidance.

To draw near - in the Hebrew intensive, 'Cause to draw near quickly.' [The Piel conjugation, qaarªbuw (H7126).]
