Though called a dowry in our translation, implying a suitable settlement upon her, the word is used in cases where it can have no meaning but as a purchase-money (cf. Exodus 22:16; 1 Samuel 18:25). х Mataan (H4976)], gift, refers to the presents made at betrothal to the bride and her relations (cf. Genesis 24:53).
